Description

Chain wear tends to be the sneaky driver of drivetrain replacement costs—by the time a stretched chain is chewing up a cassette and chainrings, you're spending several times what a timely swap would have cost. Shimano's CN-HG701 11-speed chain sits at the Ultegra/XT tier of the 11-speed lineup, sharing the same SIL-TEC surface treatment and HG-X asymmetric plate design as the pricier Dura-Ace and XTR chains without the hollow-pin weight savings. If you're running an 11-speed drivetrain and want the durable option that also happens to be e-bike rated, this is the one to keep in the parts drawer.

The SIL-TEC treatment is a PTFE-based plating on the roller and pin link plates. It reduces friction across the pin and roller interfaces, which translates to quieter running and slower wear rates compared to untreated chains. Shimano rates the HG701 for use with STEPS e-bike drivetrains, which means the plates and pins are built to handle the higher sustained torque of motor-assisted pedaling. That reinforcement carries over to acoustic and analog drivetrains as extra service life, so road and mountain riders benefit from the durability even without motor input.

Compatibility spans Shimano's entire 11-speed ecosystem. Road groups from Tiagra through Dura-Ace, mountain groups from Deore through XTR, GRX gravel components, and STEPS e-bike systems all run this chain interchangeably. The chain measures 5.62mm wide and is directional—the branding on the outer plates faces the driveside during installation. It ships 126 links long with a Quick-Link connector included, so you can install it without a connecting pin and remove it later for cleaning or waxing without breaking the chain. Size it to your specific chainring and cassette combination before installation using the largest-cog method or wrap the chain around the big-big combo and add two links.
