Every Di2 build needs somewhere for the wires to converge, and on externally-routed frames that somewhere is Junction B — the second of the two junction boxes in a standard Di2 layout, mounted down by the bottom bracket rather than up at the stem. Shimano's SM-JC40 is the external version of that Junction B, a four-port box that ties the front derailleur, rear derailleur, battery, and the wire running up to the cockpit junction (Junction A) into a single connection point under the BB shell.

The SM-JC40 mounts using the bolt that normally holds a mechanical cable guide to the underside of the bottom bracket shell, and it ships with two different-length bolts to accommodate different frame designs. Because it lives on the outside of the frame, it's easy to reach when you're diagnosing a shifting issue, updating firmware through a wired connection, or swapping a component wire without pulling the bottom bracket. That's the trade-off with external routing generally — the wires are visible, but the system is genuinely serviceable.

Compatibility is where this part needs a careful read. The SM-JC40 uses the older EW-SD50 wire standard, which covers 10- and 11-speed Di2 groupsets including Dura-Ace 9070/9150, Ultegra 6870/8050, and 11-speed GRX RX815. It is not compatible with the original 7970-series Dura-Ace Di2, and it is not a drop-in match for current 12-speed R9200 or R8100 systems, which have moved to the newer EW-SD300 wire and its smaller connector.
