If you're bleeding a next-gen Shimano brake system, the fluid you reach for matters more than it used to. Shimano's Low Viscosity Disc Brake Oil (SM-LVOIL) was developed alongside the current XTR M9200 and Deore XT M8200 platforms, and it's not backwards compatible with older Shimano mineral oil brakes. Running the wrong fluid in either direction — old oil in a new caliper or new oil in a legacy system — will cause problems, so this one is worth double-checking before you crack a bleed port.

The thinner formulation is the whole point. Lower viscosity means the oil moves through the lines more freely, which translates to a quicker, more consistent lever response and a bite point that stays put across a wider temperature range. Alpine descents that used to cook standard mineral oil and shift the lever throw don't have the same effect here — the fluid holds its viscosity from cold starts through sustained heat. It also makes bleeds noticeably easier, since the oil chases air bubbles out of the system with less coaxing.

Compatibility is narrow and specific. This oil is designed for the XTR M9200/M9220 and Deore XT M8200/M8220 brake systems. It cannot be mixed with standard Shimano mineral oil, and it should not be used in older Shimano hydraulic brakes that were spec'd around the previous formulation.
