Description
Running a 54T or 55T outer ring means you need an inner chainring that maintains reasonable gear steps while still providing a bailout option for steep climbs. The Shimano Dura-Ace FC-9000 Inner Chainring in 42T fills that role, pairing specifically with the 54/42T and 55/42T configurations on the FC-9000 crankset. This is the ME-type ring designed for those large-ring combinations, so it won't work with smaller outer rings like the 50T, 52T, or 53T options that use different shift ramp positions.
The FC-9000 crankset introduced Shimano's four-arm asymmetric spider design with a 110mm bolt circle diameter that works across compact, standard, and large-ring configurations. That flexibility means you can swap chainring combinations on the same crank arms without changing hardware, but the rings themselves are engineered as matched pairs. The 42T inner has shift ramps and tooth profiles positioned to work with the corresponding 54T or 55T outer ring for clean front shifts. Mixing ring types from different size combinations will result in poor shifting performance.
Hollowglide construction keeps the chainring stiff while reducing weight through strategically hollowed sections in the ring body. The teeth use carbide-reinforced alloy for durability, which extends service life compared to standard aluminum construction and maintains consistent shifting feel as the ring wears. Integrated chainring nuts simplify installation since you don't need separate hardware beyond what's already on your crank.... Read More
