Wireless shifting eliminates one of the last complications in modern cockpit integration. The Shimano Dura-Ace ST-R9270 dual control lever sends shift commands via Bluetooth Low Energy to the derailleurs, removing the need for wiring through bars and stems that have become increasingly difficult to route in today's integrated cockpits. Each lever runs on a CR1632 coin cell battery that Shimano estimates will last 1.5 to 2 years before needing replacement, and swapping batteries takes less than a minute without any tools beyond a coin.

The lever ergonomics changed significantly for the R9200 generation. The hood bodies sit taller with a slight inward curve that creates a more natural perch for your hands during long rides. The lever body extends 4.6mm further than the previous R9170 version, providing more space between your fingers and the handlebar when you grab the brake levers from the drops. Shift switches got redesigned as well, with longer paddles that are easier to reach in the drops and increased offset between them so you can tell by feel which one you're pressing. There's also a third function switch on each hood that you can assign through the E-Tube Project app to control features like di2 mode switching or satellite shifter pairing.

Braking runs through Shimano's Servo Wave Action system, which changes the mechanical advantage of the lever throughout its stroke. Initial lever travel moves the pads quickly toward the rotor, then the leverage ratio increases once the pads make contact so you can modulate power with precision through the rest of the stroke. The system creates a 13% wider control area compared to the previous generation, which translates to finer adjustments when feathering the brakes in corners or modulating speed on descents.
