GRX FC-RX810-2 Crankset
Description
One of the more common conversions we see at Excel is a road rider building up a gravel bike and trying to figure out whether to reuse a 50/34 compact crankset or step into something purpose-built. The Shimano GRX FC-RX810-2 is the reason we usually steer people toward the purpose-built option. It sits at the Ultegra performance tier of Shimano's 11-speed lineup but shifts the chainline outboard by 2.5mm, opening frame clearance for wider tires and giving the front derailleur a cleaner line to the cassette on a gravel-specific rear end.
The 48-31T chainring combination is the key spec here. The 17-tooth front range is wider than a standard 52-36 or 50-34 road compact, which means when you shift to the inner ring on a punchy climb, you actually drop into a meaningfully lower gear instead of running out of cassette. Paired with an 11-34T cassette, the low gear gets you up loose fire roads without walking, and the 48-tooth outer still holds speed on pavement transfers between dirt sections. It's the gearing setup that lets a 2x drivetrain do what a 1x can't—preserve tight cadence steps in the middle of the cassette where you actually spend most of your ride.
Hollowtech II construction keeps the arms hollow-forged rather than drilled or bonded, which is what gives Shimano their stiffness-to-weight advantage over cranksets that machine material out after the fact. The four-arm 110/80 BCD spider matches the rest of the GRX and Ultegra 11-speed family, and the crankset is compatible with both mechanical and Di2 GRX shifting when paired with the matching front derailleur....
