Description
Shimano built the GRX 800 series to sit at Ultegra-level performance while addressing the specific demands of mixed-surface riding, and the FC-RX810-2 crankset reflects that positioning. The hollow forged aluminum crank arms use the same Hollowtech construction found on Shimano's road groups, but with a beefier profile that borrows from the mountain bike side of the catalog. That stouter build handles the additional stress that comes from pedaling through washboard gravel and the occasional rock strike without adding unnecessary weight to the rotating mass you're pushing on every pedal stroke.
The 48-31T chainring combination delivers a 17-tooth front range that lands in the sweet spot for gravel riding. The 48-tooth outer ring provides enough gear for fast descents and paved road sections without the overkill of a standard 50-tooth compact, while the 31-tooth inner ring drops you into climbing gears that keep you seated and spinning when the gradient kicks up on loose surfaces. Staying seated on gravel climbs isn't just about comfort—it's about maintaining rear wheel traction when standing would break the tire loose. Pair this crankset with an 11-34T cassette and you've got range that covers loaded bikepacking trips through mountain passes and spirited group rides alike.
The aluminum chainrings use GRX-specific tooth profiles with shift pin placement optimized for reliable front shifts even when the drivetrain is caked with dust or grit. The asymmetric 4-arm spider design mirrors what Shimano uses on its road groups, positioning the outer ring on the 110mm bolt circle and the inner ring on the 80mm circle. Both rings are available separately as replacement parts, so when the teeth eventually wear you're buying chainrings rather than a complete crankset. The hard anodized finish on the teeth extends their service life compared to softer aluminum treatments.... Read More
