Description

Running a 1x drivetrain on a gravel bike means the chainring does more work than it would on a 2x setup — every gear ratio flows through a single ring, and chain retention becomes non-negotiable when you're bouncing across washboard and roots. The Shimano GRX FC-RX820-1 crankset addresses that reality with a narrow-wide chainring, Hollowtech II construction, and a 49.7mm chainline tuned specifically for gravel frames running wide tires. It's the 12-speed successor to the RX810-1, sharing the same asymmetric 110mm BCD chainring pattern but built around the narrower spacing that GRX 12-speed drivetrains require.

Chainring options cover the range that most 1x gravel riders actually use. The 40T ring paired with a 10-45T cassette delivers tight gear steps that keep cadence controlled during hard efforts and group rides, while the 10-51T cassette pairing opens up the low end for loaded touring or steep, sustained climbing. Step up to 42T, 44T, or 46T chainrings if you want more top-end for fast, rolling gravel or mixed-surface road riding. All rings use the asymmetric 110mm BCD pattern and are sold separately, so you can swap gearing seasonally without replacing the crank.

Crank arm lengths run from 160mm to 175mm in 2.5mm increments, which gives shorter riders a legitimate option instead of forcing everyone into 170mm or longer. The 151mm Q-factor lands between road and mountain bike stance width — natural for gravel shoes and pedals, and consistent with the rest of the GRX platform. Pedal threads are standard 9/16", and installation requires a Hollowtech II external bottom bracket, sold separately. The crankset works with frames using 135mm or 142mm rear hub spacing and chainstays of 415mm or longer, so verify your frame's chainstay length before ordering if you're building around an older or unusually short-stay frame....
