Description

Running a 2x setup on a gravel bike sounds counterintuitive to anyone who's spent the last few years watching 1x take over, but the argument for a double chainring gets stronger the more time you spend riding mixed pavement and dirt at pace. The Shimano GRX FC-RX820-2 is built around that use case, pairing a 48-31T chainring combo with a 12-speed rear to give you tighter jumps between gears than any 1x setup can match. If you're riding gravel events where holding a wheel on flat pavement matters as much as surviving the climbs, the 2x drivetrain keeps your cadence dialed in ways a 10-51T single-ring block simply can't.

The Hollowtech II construction integrates the drive-side crankarm with the 24mm steel spindle, and the hollow-forged aluminum arms come in 170mm, 172.5mm, and 175mm lengths so you can match your existing fit rather than compromising on what's in stock. The 17-tooth difference between the 48T outer and 31T inner covers a wide operating range when combined with either an 11-34T or 11-36T 12-speed cassette, and the chainrings use a dual BCD pattern (110mm outer, 80mm inner) that Shimano sells as replacement parts down the road.

The 47mm chainline sits 2.5mm wider than a standard road crankset, which is the detail that makes this a gravel-specific piece rather than a rebadged road crank. That extra offset gives frame designers more room for wider tires and shorter chainstays, and it works in concert with the FD-RX820 front derailleur's cage geometry to keep shifting crisp with the wider spread. The 151mm Q-factor follows the same logic, positioning your feet slightly outboard of a road stance for a more stable pedaling platform on loose surfaces.... Read More
