Description

Pairing a gravel bike with mountain bike cassettes opens up gearing options that road-focused derailleurs cannot handle. The GRX RD-RX812 from Shimano bridges that gap, accepting cassettes up to 42 teeth while maintaining compatibility with road-style dual control levers. That combination lets you run gearing ratios previously reserved for mountain bikes without switching to flat bars or mountain shifters. If you have been eyeing an 11-40 or 11-42 cassette for steep gravel climbs but did not want to give up your drop bar setup, this derailleur makes it work.

The derailleur uses Shimano's Shadow RD+ design, which positions the mechanism closer to the frame and integrates a clutch-based chain stabilizer. The clutch keeps constant tension on the chain as you ride over rough terrain, preventing the slap and bounce that would otherwise cause noise, dropped chains, or missed shifts. The stabilizer has an on/off switch so you can disengage it when removing wheels or working on the bike. With the clutch engaged, the drivetrain stays quiet and secure even on washboard gravel or chunky singletrack. The low-profile positioning also improves ground clearance, which matters when you are threading through rock gardens or catching a pedal strike on an unexpected obstacle.

Shimano tuned the clutch specifically for gravel applications. The tension sits in a sweet spot between road and mountain settings, firm enough to control chain movement but not so stiff that shifting becomes sluggish. The result is consistent performance whether you are soft-pedaling on pavement or hammering through loose corners. The 31-tooth total capacity handles the gear range spread between an 11-tooth top cog and 42-tooth climbing gear without the chain running too tight or too loose at the extremes.... Read More
