Description

Dropping the front derailleur simplifies your cockpit and removes one more variable from rough terrain riding. No front shifts to fumble when you are descending loose singletrack or grinding up a gravel climb. The GRX RD-RX817 Di2 rear derailleur from Shimano handles the gear range duties solo, accepting cassettes up to 42 teeth while delivering motor-driven shift precision that works the same whether you are fresh or fatigued at mile eighty.

Di2 electronic actuation means shifts happen with a button press regardless of cable stretch, housing condition, or how much grit has worked into the system. The motor drives the parallelogram through its sweep with consistent force and timing, delivering the same crisp engagement on the last shift of the day as the first. The system integrates with GRX Di2 shift levers, and you can add satellite shifters to the tops or drops for alternate hand positions. E-Tube Project software lets you customize shift speed and button functions, and firmware updates keep the system current as Shimano releases improvements.

Shimano's Shadow RD+ design positions the derailleur body close to the frame with an integrated clutch mechanism that maintains chain tension over rough terrain. Without the clutch, the chain bounces and slaps as your bike rattles over washboard gravel, creating noise and risking dropped chains. The clutch holds tension on the cage, keeping the chain taut and quiet through the roughest sections. An on/off switch next to the upper pulley disengages the clutch when you need to remove the wheel or work on the drivetrain. The clutch tension is calibrated specifically for gravel applications, firm enough to control chain movement but not so aggressive that it affects shift quality.... Read More
