The RX817 is the odd one out in Shimano's GRX Di2 lineup — it's the 1x-only derailleur, borrowed almost wholesale from the Di2 XT mountain bike platform rather than developed as a road-going 2x unit like its RX815 sibling. That heritage matters. It means an 11T tension pulley instead of the RX815's 13T, a shorter cage, and a slant geometry pulled directly from the MTB parts bin to reach cassettes up to 42T. If you're building a dedicated single-ring gravel bike and want Di2 shifting, this is the one Shimano designed for the job.

Total capacity is 31T, with a low sprocket range of 40-42T and 11T on the high end. That covers the standard gravel 1x cassette options — 11-40 or 11-42 — and pairs with any Shimano 11-speed drivetrain. Running it as part of a 2x setup isn't officially supported by Shimano; the RX815 is the intended 2x rear derailleur. The Shadow RD+ clutch is what separates this from a road derailleur.
