Shimano's new 12-speed GRX group leans hard into the wide-range 1x setups that gravel racers and bikepackers have been building for years, and the RD-RX822-SGS is the piece that makes those builds work off the shelf. This is the long-cage version of the RX822 rear derailleur, engineered to handle a 10-51T cassette borrowed from Shimano's mountain bike lineup so you can spin up loaded climbs without dropping to a smaller chainring. It's a 1x-specific design, meaning it drops the front-shift complexity and focuses everything on managing chain tension across a huge rear range.

The SGS cage designation is important here. Total chain wrap capacity comes in at 41 teeth, which is what allows the derailleur to take up slack from a 10-tooth cog all the way to a 51-tooth bailout. If you're running the GS medium cage, you're capped at 45T and 35 teeth of total capacity — a fine setup for racing, but not what you want when the map shows a 15% grade at mile 60. The SGS is the piece to spec when climbing gear matters more than tight jumps between cogs.

One catch worth flagging before you buy: the 10-51T cassette runs on Shimano's Micro Spline freehub body, not the HG spline used on most road and gravel wheels. If your current wheelset is HG-only, budget for a Micro Spline freehub swap or a new rear hub to make this drivetrain work. It's the same freehub interface used across Shimano's 12-speed MTB groups, so options are plentiful, but it's not a bolt-on upgrade from an 11-speed GRX build.
