Description
Gravel's drivetrain fragmentation creates a wheel compatibility puzzle that most manufacturers ignore. Riders running 2x setups need standard HG freehubs for 11-36T cassettes, while those chasing mountain bike gear ranges require Micro Spline for 10-tooth cogs. The Shimano GRX WH-RX880 addresses this divide with a convertible hub system that accepts either freehub body, allowing the same wheelset to serve radically different gearing philosophies without requiring a second set of hoops.
The RX880 arrives as the companion wheelset to Shimano's 12-speed GRX mechanical components, though its neutral branding means it integrates cleanly with any gravel build. At a claimed 1,397 grams for the pair, these carbon wheels sit in competitive territory for gravel-specific hoops, shedding 64 grams from the previous RX870 generation while maintaining the same 32mm rim depth. The shallow profile prioritizes acceleration and climbing response over aerodynamic gains, a sensible choice given that gravel racing rarely involves sustained high-speed pacelines where deeper sections would pay dividends.
Shimano borrowed the Direct Engagement freehub mechanism from its Dura-Ace road wheels, replacing the traditional pawl system with larger ratchets that increase the contact area between hub and cassette. The result is a stiffer connection that reduces the sponginess some riders notice when accelerating hard, particularly out of corners or during punchy efforts. The ratchet engagement also proves quieter than pawl-based systems when coasting, a minor consideration that becomes more noticeable during long days in the saddle.... Read More
