Description
Resin or sintered comes down to how you ride and where you ride. The L05A-RF uses Shimano's 5th generation resin compound, which prioritizes modulation and quiet operation over raw bite. If you're doing most of your braking in dry conditions with occasional wet weather, resin pads deliver a smoother, more predictable feel at the lever. The trade-off is faster wear compared to sintered metal pads, though Shimano claims the L05A compound lasts about 50% longer than the previous L03A generation it replaces. For riders who value controllable braking over maximum stopping power, resin remains the compound of choice.
The RF designation indicates these pads include ICE Technologies cooling fins, which distinguishes them from the non-finned L05A-R version. Aluminum fins extend from the backing plate into the airflow between pad and caliper body, acting as heat sinks that pull thermal energy away from the friction material. The fins matter most during repeated hard braking or sustained descending where heat buildup would otherwise cause fade. If your typical riding involves rolling terrain with brief braking zones, the non-finned version saves a few dollars. If you're regularly descending for extended periods, the finned version pays for itself in consistent lever feel.
Compatibility spans nearly every Shimano flat-mount road and gravel caliper produced in the past decade. The L05A-RF fits current 12-speed calipers including the BR-R9270, BR-R8170, and BR-R7170 from Dura-Ace, Ultegra, and 105 respectively, as well as the previous 11-speed generation BR-R9170, BR-R8070, and BR-R7070. GRX gravel calipers including the BR-RX820, BR-RX810, and BR-RX400 also use this pad. Tiagra flat-mount calipers and the older RS-series road disc brakes round out the compatibility list. The pads also fit certain 2-piston mountain calipers including the BR-M8110 and BR-M7110 from XT and SLX, though most MTB setups use the J-series pad shape instead.... Read More
