Shimano's newest 4-piston XTR and XT calipers — the BR-M9220 and BR-M8220 — use a narrow "P-type" pad shape that isn't cross-compatible with the older N-series pads that fit BR-M9120 and BR-M8120. The P03A-RF is the resin option in that new pad family, and it's the one to grab if you're chasing quieter braking and smoother modulation than metallic pads deliver, plus the heat management that comes with finned aluminum backing plates. Ships as a pair with the pad return spring included, so you have everything needed to swap in a fresh set.

The "RF" in the part number is the tell for the aluminum radiator fins that extend up out of the caliper once installed. Shimano's Ice Technologies cooling story has been around for several pad generations now, and the practical benefit is straightforward: on sustained descents, the fins pull heat out of the pad and backing plate before it migrates into the caliper body and boils fluid or fades the pads. If you're mostly riding rolling XC terrain, the finned version is overkill — but for trail, enduro, and anything with real vertical, it earns its keep.

Resin versus metallic is the real decision here. The third-generation resin compound Shimano is running in the P03A-RF bites progressively rather than grabbing hard off the top, which most riders read as better control and easier one-finger braking. It's also gentler on rotors, which matters if you're running Ice Tech Freeza rotors that aren't cheap to replace. The tradeoff is wear rate — resin pads chew through faster than metallic in wet, gritty conditions where mud accelerates abrasion.
