Description

Resin compounds and metallic compounds each have their place in mountain biking, and understanding the tradeoffs helps you pick the right pad for your riding. The Shimano P03A-RF uses Shimano's third-generation resin formula, which delivers quieter braking and smoother modulation than metal pads at the cost of slightly higher wear rates. If you're running XTR BR-M9220 or XT BR-M8220 4-piston calipers and prefer a pad that bites progressively rather than grabbing hard immediately, this is the compound that gets you there.

The "RF" designation indicates these pads include aluminum cooling fins that extend from the backing plate. Shimano calls this Ice Technologies, and the practical benefit shows up on long descents where sustained braking generates heat. Without adequate heat dissipation, brake fade sets in and your lever pull increases while stopping power drops. The fins radiate heat away from the pad and rotor interface, helping maintain consistent lever feel when you're dragging brakes down extended technical sections. This matters more on enduro-length descents than XC riding, but the cooling capacity doesn't hurt in any application.

The P03A-RF uses a narrow "P-type" pad shape designed specifically for Shimano's 4-piston calipers. These calipers use four smaller pistons rather than two larger ones, which spreads braking force more evenly across the pad surface and improves heat distribution. The pad shape matches that piston layout, so you get full contact across the braking surface without overhang or gaps. The alloy backing plate keeps weight reasonable while providing a stable mounting surface for the resin compound.... Read More
