Description
Dual-sided SPD pedals have been around for decades, and the PD-M520 explains why the design endures. Shimano built these pedals around a chrome-moly steel spindle running on sealed cartridge bearings, which means the internals stay protected from trail debris and moisture without requiring constant attention. The open binding design keeps mud from packing into the mechanism, and the compact pedal body sheds gunk naturally as you ride. If you have ever fought with clogged pedals on a wet day, you will appreciate how cleanly these clear themselves.
The retention system uses the same SPD interface found across Shimano's entire mountain lineup, from entry-level builds to XTR race bikes. Spring tension adjusts with a 3mm hex key, letting you dial the release force from featherlight to locked-in depending on how aggressively you ride. Looser tension works well when you are learning clipless or riding technical terrain where quick foot-down moments matter. Tighter settings keep your feet planted during hard efforts and rough descents. The included SH-51 cleats provide single-direction release by rotating your heel outward, though you can swap to SH-56 multi-release cleats if you want the option to pull straight up in sketchy situations.
Installation works with either a 6mm Allen key from the crank side or a standard 15mm pedal wrench on the spindle flats. The Allen key gets them started, but Shimano recommends finishing with a pedal wrench to hit proper torque. Double-sided entry means no fumbling to find the right orientation when you clip in, which matters when you are restarting on a climb or getting back on the bike after a technical section....
