Description

All-metal construction separates the PD-M540 from Shimano's entry-level SPD offerings. Where the M520 uses a plastic lockring and broader axle profile, the M540 goes fully metallic with a slimmer chrome-moly spindle and simplified internals. That construction change drops 28 grams from the pair and gives the pedal a more refined appearance, though the core SPD mechanism remains identical. Both pedals use the same cleat interface, the same retention system, and the same sealed cartridge bearings. The difference comes down to materials and finishing.

The open binding design clears mud effectively by leaving space around the retention mechanism rather than enclosing it in a cage. When you step into the pedal, debris gets pushed out instead of packing into the engagement points. Spring tension adjusts via 3mm hex bolts on each side of the pedal, letting you set the release force anywhere from beginner-friendly loose to race-day secure. The included SH-51 cleats provide single-direction release by rotating your heel outward, and you can swap to SH-56 multi-release cleats if you prefer the option to pull up and out in technical situations.

Installation requires an 8mm Allen key inserted into the end of the spindle. Unlike the M520, there are no pedal wrench flats on the axle, which contributes to the slimmer profile but means you need that hex key for removal. If your pedals tend to seize in the crank threads over time, keep that 8mm accessible and apply fresh grease on the threads during installation. The dual-sided entry means no fumbling to find the engagement side when clipping in, which matters during race starts or when remounting after technical sections.... Read More
