The M530 has been the go-to caged SPD pedal for trail riders on a budget for close to a decade, and when Shimano finally replaced it, the ME700 borrowed enough from the XTR redesign to feel like a real upgrade rather than a refresh. The Shimano PD-ME700 SPD Trail Pedals sit at a nominally SLX-level price point with a dual-sided binding mechanism wrapped by an alloy cage that runs 7.7mm wider and 1.2mm thinner in profile than the pedal it replaces. That extra width puts more aluminum under your shoe while the reduced stack brings your foot closer to the spindle centerline.

The integrated cage does two jobs at once. It gives you a stable platform to push against when you're pedaling through chunk and haven't quite gotten clipped in yet, and it shields the SPD binding mechanism from rock strikes that would otherwise chew up the retention claws. Shimano shaped the aft section of the platform slightly higher than the fore, which increases shoe contact area by around 12 percent compared to the M530 and gives the pedal a more definite orientation under your foot.

Internally, this is the same hardware Shimano has been building for decades: a chromoly spindle spinning on a sealed cartridge bearing with cup-and-cone internals that you can service rather than replace. Entry and release tension adjust independently on each side with a 3mm hex, and the pedals ship with SM-SH51 single-release cleats. If you prefer easier disengagement at upward angles, the SM-SH56 multi-release cleats are a direct swap. Standard SPD cleat pattern, so any Shimano-compatible mountain shoe works without adapters.
