Description

Cable friction accumulates through every housing curve and frame routing point between your shifter and derailleur, and that friction translates directly into lever effort and shift precision. Shimano's Polymer Coated Shift Cable addresses this with a bonded polymer layer that wraps around the stainless steel strands in a tubular structure, reducing the contact surface area against the housing liner. The texture looks almost fur-like up close, but that's by design—the grooves trap lubricant and maintain the low-friction characteristics longer than smooth cables that shed grease over time.

This cable debuted with the Dura-Ace 9000 series and remains Shimano's top-tier shift cable for mechanical drivetrains. The polymer coating cuts sliding resistance significantly compared to bare stainless or PTFE-coated cables, which means lighter lever action and crisper indexing. Shimano pairs these cables with their SP-41 housing in complete cable sets, and the combination delivers the best shift feel you'll get from a cable-actuated system. If you're replacing just the inner cable, apply a light coat of Shimano SIS SP41 grease before threading it through your housing for optimal results.

One installation note matters here: the low-friction coating can cause cable slip at the derailleur fixing bolt after you've pre-stretched the cable. Shimano addresses this by approving the polymer cable only for derailleurs with stronger cable fixing hardware. The approved list includes Dura-Ace RD-9000 and newer, Ultegra RD-6800 and newer, 105 RD-5700 and newer, plus XTR RD-M980 and XT RD-M780 on the mountain side. Older derailleurs with weaker pinch bolts may not grip the slick cable surface securely, leading to cable slip under load.... Read More
