Description
Brake cables don't get the attention they deserve until something feels off at the lever. Spongy modulation, heavy pull, or that vague sensation where you're not quite sure how much stopping power you're actually getting usually traces back to friction somewhere in the system. The Shimano PTFE Road Brake Cableset addresses friction at both points of contact: the inner cable surface and the housing liner. The result is a complete front and rear brake setup that restores the direct, predictable feel your calipers had when they were new.
Shimano applies their SIL-TEC treatment to the stainless steel inner cables before the individual wires get laid into the cable construction. This matters because post-formation coatings tend to flake off over time and clog the housing, while die-extruded PTFE bonds at the wire level and stays put through years of use. The embedded fluorine particles reduce sliding resistance enough that you'll notice the difference immediately, especially on longer descents where lever fatigue compounds over repeated braking efforts.
The included SLR housing uses a hard polymer liner that stiffens the outer casing compared to standard brake housing. Road brake systems benefit from this reduced compression because more of your lever input translates directly to caliper movement rather than getting absorbed by housing flex. You get two housing lengths in the kit, 1400mm and 800mm, which covers most road bike routing with material to spare for clean cuts and proper ferrule seating. The pre-lubricated liner works with the PTFE cable coating to minimize friction across the entire cable run from lever to caliper.... Read More
