Shimano built the S-Phyre Merino Socks around 60% Australian extra-fine Merino wool for exactly that kind of day. Extra-fine refers to the diameter of the individual fibers, and it is the reason this wool can sit against skin without the scratch people remember from older wool socks. It also moves moisture as your feet produce it rather than letting it collect in the knit.

The rest of the work is fit. Piqué knitting through the cuff adds surface texture that grips the leg, so the sock stays where you set it instead of creeping down toward the ankle three hours into a ride. Arch and heel supports are knitted into the structure rather than added as separate panels, which steadies the foot while you pedal. Reinforced ribbing around the heel absorbs the abrasion that comes from pulling a stiff-heeled road shoe on and off several times a week.
