Wide feet and race-oriented cycling shoes have always had a complicated relationship. Most riders with a broader forefoot end up sizing up to escape hot spots and numbness, which trades a fit problem in the toe box for a heel-slip problem that quietly bleeds power on every upstroke. Shimano's SH-RC703E is the Wide-last version of the RC703, using the same Dynalast Wide shape found across Shimano's E-width lineup to add volume where you actually need it without stretching the sole platform or moving the cleat position.

The sole underneath is identical to the standard RC703. A hollow carbon midsole hits a stiffness index of 10 out of 12 on Shimano's scale, which puts it two notches shy of the flagship S-Phyre RC903 and, per most reviewers who've spent time in both, well past the threshold where any recreational rider could feel the difference. Low stack height keeps your foot close to the pedal spindle for direct feedback, and the drainage ports at the toe and heel of the carbon plate vent air on hot days and shed water on wet ones.

Closure comes from a pair of BOA L6Z dials — the same interface as the standard-width RC703, not the fancier Li2 dials that live on the S-Phyre. The top dial tensions the main instep strap and the bottom dial routes through the Power Zone lace guide system, a three-row setup that lets you tune toe box tension independently of the midfoot.
