The SH-RX910 S-Phyre WIDE is Shimano's answer to that contradiction, and it borrows heavily from the S-Phyre road playbook. Same 12/12 stiffness index as the RC903 road shoe, same premium dual BOA Li2 dial closure, same low-profile anti-twist heel cup — but adapted for two-bolt SPD cleats and dirty conditions. The WIDE last adds volume through the forefoot without pushing you up a full size, which matters if you've been sizing up on standard S-Phyre models just to get your metatarsals to stop screaming at hour three.

The headline feature is the new Pontoon Cleat System. A pair of TPU blocks bolts between the shoe and the SPD cleat, effectively building a larger platform around the cleat to mimic the contact patch you'd get from a road pedal. The result is a noticeably more stable pedal-shoe interface — less rocking on the cleat, fewer hot spots on long efforts, and cleaner power transfer regardless of exactly where your cleat is dialed in on the track. The pontoons are replaceable, so when they wear down from clipping in and out over a season, you refresh them instead of replacing the shoes.

The outsole is TPU with widely spaced lugs — durable and light, but not the grippiest compound on wet rock or slick roots, so plan accordingly if your gravel routes turn technical. Dual drainage holes in the sole let water escape after creek crossings and add ventilation on hot days. The synthetic leather upper wraps the foot with a 360-degree construction that's seamless where it counts, and the heel cup uses an anti-twist stabilizer that locks the rear of the foot in place during out-of-saddle efforts. If you've been running Shimano's older RX8 and liked it, this is a stiffer, more secure, more expensive step up — the pontoon setup adds a bit of weight over the RX8, but the trade for stability is worth it if you're racing or chasing PRs on long gravel days.
