SH-XC703E Mountain Shoes WIDE
Description
Wide-footed riders shopping the XC race category tend to end up in one of two places: cramming into a standard-width shoe and hoping it stretches, or settling for a lower-tier shoe just because the fit works. The Shimano SH-XC703E is the wide-last version of the XC703, engineered for the same racers Shimano's standard XC703 targets, just with additional volume through the toe box and forefoot. You get the carbon-reinforced midsole, dual BOA closure, and ULTREAD outsole of the standard shoe, without paying a fit tax for having wider feet.
Stiffness lands at 9 out of 12 on Shimano's internal scale, which is one notch below the flagship S-PHYRE XC903 and puts the XC703E firmly in race territory. The midsole uses a carbon-reinforced nylon construction rather than a full carbon plate, which is where the price gap between this shoe and the XC903 shows up. In practical terms, level 9 stiffness delivers direct power transfer on climbs and sprints while leaving enough flex to walk a race feed zone or hike-a-bike section without your feet going numb.
Two L6 Type Z BOA dials handle closure, with a low-profile crossover lacing pattern that pulls the surround-wrapping upper evenly across the top of the foot. The L6 dials are single-direction—click to tighten, pop the dial to release—so if you overshoot the tension, you're starting over. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing before your first ride. The lower dial sits behind a small bash guard to keep trail debris from unwinding your fit mid-descent.... Read More
