Description

Sluggish shifting often has nothing to do with derailleur adjustment or cable tension. The culprit is friction inside the housing, where the inner cable drags against the liner with every shift. Shimano's SIS-SP41 Shift Cable Grease addresses this directly. It's the same silicone-based grease Shimano pre-applies to their SP41 shift housing at the factory, now available separately for cable maintenance and fresh installations where you need to restore that factory-smooth feel.

The silicone base matters because it won't attack plastic cable liners the way petroleum-based greases can. Standard greases and oils can soften or swell the polymer liner inside shift housing, which creates more friction rather than less and accelerates wear on both the cable and housing. Silicone grease remains inert against these materials while still providing the lubrication layer that lets the cable slide freely. The formulation stays put rather than migrating or drying out, so you're not constantly reapplying.

Application is straightforward: coat the inner cable with a thin layer before threading it through the housing. You don't need much, just enough to create a film that covers the cable surface. For existing installations where shifting has become sticky, you can work small amounts of grease into the housing ends, though a full cable replacement with fresh grease typically delivers better results than trying to refresh worn components. Shimano's dealer manuals specifically recommend this grease for their higher-end drivetrains, noting that mixing incompatible greases or using non-silicone lubricants can degrade shifting performance....
