The lock ring is the small part that does the actual work of holding a Center Lock rotor on your hub, and it's also the part that tends to disappear into a parts bin the moment you separate a rotor from a wheel. The Shimano SM-RT81 Disc Rotor Lock Ring is the direct replacement, sold with its washer, and it uses the internally splined interface that engages a standard cassette lockring tool — so no specialty driver is needed to install it. If you've pulled a rotor for travel, swapped wheelsets, or bought a bare rotor that shipped without hardware, this is the piece that gets you back to a functional brake.

The internally splined pattern matters for one specific reason: it clears thru-axles smaller than 12mm and works on quick-release wheels where an externally splined lockring won't fit over the axle end cap. If you're running a road or gravel wheelset with a 12mm thru-axle, or any older QR hub, this is the version you want. Externally splined lockrings are the alternative for 15mm and 20mm thru-axle hubs where the larger axle diameter blocks the internal-tool interface. Both types clamp the rotor identically once installed — the distinction is entirely about tool access around the axle.

Installation uses a Shimano TL-LR15, Park Tool BBT-5/FR-5, or any compatible cassette lockring tool, torqued to Shimano's spec of 40Nm. The included washer sits between the lockring and rotor to distribute clamping load. Center Lock as a system is faster than six-bolt at the workbench — one interface instead of six torqued bolts — and this lockring is the consumable that makes that system work.
