Description
Float determines how much your foot can rotate on the pedal before hitting the release point, and Shimano's color-coded SPD-SL Road Cleats let you choose between fixed positioning and two levels of movement. The SM-SH11 yellow cleats provide 6 degrees of float with a center pivot point, allowing your foot to find its natural angle through the pedal stroke. The SM-SH12 blue cleats reduce that to 2 degrees with a front-center pivot that eliminates lateral sliding while permitting slight heel rotation. The SM-SH10 red cleats lock your foot in a completely fixed position with zero float, demanding precise cleat placement but delivering the most direct power transfer.
Yellow cleats ship with most Shimano road pedals because the 6-degree float accommodates a wide range of foot angles and provides room for error during cleat setup. That movement reduces stress on knees and ankles for riders who haven't dialed in their optimal position or whose natural pedaling motion varies slightly through the stroke. The center pivot point lets your toes angle inward or outward equally, which works well for riders who haven't had a professional bike fit or who experience discomfort with more restrictive cleats.
Blue cleats split the difference for riders who want tighter connection without going fully fixed. The front-center pivot eliminates the lateral play that some riders find distracting while still allowing your heel to move slightly. That 2-degree range is enough to keep most knees happy while feeling more locked-in than the yellow option. Shimano developed the blue cleats for the Dura-Ace pedals, where the tighter interface complements the pedal's precision, but they work with any SPD-SL pedal in the lineup.... Read More
