Description

Chain tools split roughly into two camps: the ones that live in a home mechanic's toolbox and see action a few times a year, and the ones that sit on a workbench and get used every day. Shimano's TL-CN35 is squarely in the second camp — a workshop-grade chain tool built for cutting and connecting 9, 10, 11, and 12-speed Shimano chains without wearing out or losing precision after the hundredth use. The oversize ergonomic lever is the tell: it's sized for leverage and grip comfort over a full shift, not just occasional wrench work.

The internals are where the price makes sense. A ball bearing sits between the driving pin and the threaded axle, cutting down on the rotational effort it takes to push a pin through a plate, and the axle threads get a molybdenum treatment for smoother operation over the long haul. The driving pin itself is Shimano's design — it retains the excess ring released from the rivet when you break a chain, so that small piece doesn't drop into the works or onto the floor. The tool ships with two spare pins tucked into a storage compartment in the grip, so when the driving pin eventually bends or wears from repeated use, replacements are already on hand.

The nickel-plated body resists corrosion from chain lube, degreasers, and the general grime that accumulates on a busy bench. A connecting pin guide remover is built in for snapping off the pilot portion of Shimano's reinforced connecting pins after installation. If you're breaking a chain once a season, the home-mechanic TL-CN29 will do the job. If you're sizing chains on customer bikes or maintaining a personal fleet, the TL-CN35 is the version that stays in service.
