TL-FC16 Crank Arm Installation Tool
Description
Every Hollowtech II crankset ships with a plastic preload cap that sets bearing tension before the pinch bolts clamp the left arm down, and that cap has a specific splined interface that nothing else in a typical toolkit engages cleanly. The Shimano TL-FC16 is the dedicated tool for that cap — it drops into the splines, gives you a wide grip surface, and lets you dial in preload by hand without chewing up the plastic. If you're pulling a Hollowtech II crank for a bottom bracket service or building up a new bike, this is the piece that makes step one clean.
The workflow is straightforward. Thread the cap in with the TL-FC16 until you feel light resistance, which is Shimano's spec of 0.7 to 1.5 Nm — essentially finger-tight, just enough to eliminate lateral play at the spindle. Then torque the two pinch bolts on the non-drive arm to spec and the cap's structural job is done. Over-tightening the preload cap is the most common mistake we see on this job, and it binds the bearings enough to feel drag when you spin the cranks by hand. The wide grip on the TL-FC16 actually helps here — it's easy to overpower a small hex bit, but the plastic tool gives you enough feedback to stop at the right point.
Compatibility is broad across the Shimano range. Any Hollowtech II crankset uses this same cap interface — road groupsets from Claris through Dura-Ace, mountain groupsets from Deore through XTR, GRX gravel cranks, and Shimano STEPS e-bike cranks. It's the kind of $10 tool that saves the crank cap on the first install and lives in the toolbox for every future bottom bracket service after that.
