Description
Rim brake riders who want current-generation Ultegra performance without switching to disc have the BR-R8100 caliper as their option in the R8100 groupset. Shimano continues to support traditional rim brake setups alongside their disc brake offerings, and the R8100 caliper carries over the proven SLR-EV design from the previous generation with updated cosmetics to match the rest of the 12-speed Ultegra lineup. If you're maintaining a rim brake road bike or building new on a frame designed for caliper brakes, these deliver the stopping power and modulation that made the Ultegra brake reputation.
The SLR-EV system uses a dual symmetric pivot design with two bearings and a roller in the pivot area. This arrangement reduces friction during lever actuation, which translates to smoother engagement and more predictable modulation through the braking zone. You feel a distinct contact point when the pads hit the rim, and the power builds progressively from there rather than grabbing suddenly. The short-arm caliper design keeps the brake compact and stiff, minimizing flex under hard braking loads.
Shimano increased the tire clearance on the R8100 to accommodate 28mm tires, which reflects how road cycling has shifted toward wider rubber over the past several years. The caliper arms are shaped to provide this clearance while maintaining a narrow gap between the arms when viewed from the front, keeping the overall profile sleek rather than splayed wide like older designs that were retrofitted for bigger tires. A quick-release lever on each caliper lets you open the arms wider for wheel removal without deflating the tire or adjusting cable tension. Tire guide bumpers help center the wheel during reinstallation.... Read More
