Chainrings are a wear item, and the outer ring on a 12-speed road drivetrain takes the brunt of it. Once the teeth start to hook and the shift ramps lose their edge, front shifts get vague and the chain hesitates on the way up. Shimano's Ultegra FC-R8100 12-Speed Chainring is the factory replacement for that job, sold individually so you can replace the ring that's actually worn rather than buying a complete crankset.

The outer rings use HOLLOWGLIDE construction, a hollow structure pairing anodized aluminum with carbon fiber reinforced plastic that keeps the ring rigid under load without piling on mass at the largest diameter of the drivetrain. Rigidity out there is what front shifting depends on: a ring that deflects under a hard pedal stroke drops the chain onto the ramps at the wrong moment. Mounting is Shimano's asymmetric 110mm BCD 4-arm pattern, which covers FC-R8100 and FC-R8100-P cranksets along with other 110mm BCD 4-bolt asymmetric cranks. Tooth profiles are cut for 12-speed HG chains specifically, so these are not a drop-in for an 11-speed drivetrain even though the bolt pattern looks the same.
