Description
The Shimano Ultegra PD-R8000 carries technology from the Dura-Ace flagship pedal down to the Ultegra level. The carbon composite body uses integrated stainless steel contact plates that reinforce the cleat mounting surface without adding separate hardware, which saves 14 grams compared to the previous Ultegra model. The extra-wide platform spreads contact area across the three-bolt interface, distributing pressure evenly and improving power transfer efficiency when you're putting down sustained efforts. This wider surface area also helps reduce hot spots on longer rides by preventing pressure from concentrating in one area of your shoe sole.
Stack height measures 14.6 millimeters from the pedal axle centerline to the bottom of your shoe, which sits 0.7 millimeters lower than the prior generation. This reduction brings your foot closer to the pedal spindle and can improve cornering clearance when you're leaning through tight turns. The bearing placement sits wide within the pedal body, distributing load uniformly across the axle and extending bearing life under consistent use. The sealed bearing cartridges keep contaminants out and reduce the frequency of maintenance intervals. Tension adjustment bolts at the rear of each pedal let you dial in the force required to clip in and out, so you can run a lighter spring tension when learning the system or tighten things down for races and hard efforts.
The pedals ship with Shimano's SM-SH11 cleats, which provide six degrees of total float. That means your foot can rotate three degrees in either direction before the cleat releases, giving you natural movement while pedaling and reducing stress on your knees and ankles. The cleats use a composite body with TPU wear tips that protect the engagement surface when walking on pavement or through the coffee shop. If you prefer a fixed position or less float, the pedals also accommodate SM-SH10 cleats (zero float) and SM-SH12 cleats (two degrees of float), sold separately. The standard version uses Shimano's 53-millimeter Q-factor, and a plus-four-millimeter axle option is available for riders who need additional stance width to achieve proper knee alignment.
