Ultegra PD-R8200 SPD-SLR Pedals
Description
Shimano's SPD-SLR platform is the first ground-up rework of its road pedal interface since SPD-SL arrived in the early 2000s, and the Ultegra PD-R8200 is where that development lands for riders who aren't paying Dura-Ace money. The engineering came down from the flagship pedal program: a lower shoe-to-pedal interface, a broader contact surface, and a redesigned cleat that catches across a wider target when you stab for the pedal out of a corner. The carbon fiber-reinforced body carries the platform, and the whole thing is built around the idea that pedal, cleat, and shoe should be treated as one system rather than three parts that happen to fit together.
Stack height is the headline change. Dropping the interface closer to the axle shortens the lever between your foot and the spindle, which translates to a more direct feel under load and less of the vague, floaty sensation that shows up when you're mashing a big gear. The expanded contact surface backs that up by spreading pedaling force across more of the sole, so hard accelerations and long sustained efforts both feel more planted. If you've ever noticed your foot rolling slightly at the end of a long day, this is the part of the design aimed at you.
Critical compatibility note: SPD-SLR uses a new cleat. The PD-R8200 ships with CL-SL110 yellow cleats offering +/- 3 degrees of float, and the cleat range includes fixed and lower-float options along with a wide-adjustment version. These are not the SM-SH10, SM-SH11, and SM-SH12 cleats you've been running on SPD-SL pedals. Before you order, plan on new cleats and confirm how they mount to your existing shoes, because this is exactly the kind of change that catches people out mid-season.... Read More
