Description

The XT four-piston brake sits in an interesting spot in Shimano's mountain lineup — it borrows the caliper architecture and Servo-Wave lever from the XTR M9120, drops a few grams worth of premium materials, and lands at roughly two-thirds the price. For trail and enduro riders who want the stopping power without paying flagship money, the BR-M8120 has become the default answer, and it's the brake you'll see on more OEM builds in the $4,000-$7,000 range than any other four-piston system on the market.

The four-piston caliper is the headline. Two 17mm and two 15mm ceramic pistons work against finned metal pads, giving you a wider pad contact patch and roughly 10% more braking power than the two-piston M8100 caliper. That extra piston area matters most on sustained descents where heat becomes the enemy — the larger pad surface spreads thermal load across more material, and the ceramic pistons themselves resist heat transfer into the mineral oil. Pair the caliper with Shimano's Ice Tech finned pads and three-layer Ice Tech rotors and you get a thermal management system that holds bite point through the kind of long descents that cook lesser brakes.

The BL-M8100 lever drives the caliper through Shimano's Servo-Wave cam mechanism, which moves the pistons quickly during the initial part of the lever stroke to close the pad gap, then shifts to higher mechanical advantage once the pads contact the rotor. The result is a firm, immediate bite followed by predictable modulation — no dead stroke, no vague middle zone. Reach is tool-free adjustable, and free stroke is set with a 2mm hex.

Features

  • Four-piston hydraulic caliper with two 17mm and two 15mm ceramic pistons
  • Post-mount caliper with banjo hose fitting for cleaner routing
  • BL-M8100 lever with Servo-Wave actuation and integrated master cylinder
  • Tool-free reach adjust, hex-key free stroke adjust
  • I-Spec EV compatible for direct shifter mounting to the lever body
  • Approximately 10% more braking power than the two-piston M8100 version
  • Ships with finned metal pads (N04C) for improved heat dissipation
  • Ice Tech compatible — pair with three-layer clad rotors for full thermal system
  • Uses Shimano mineral oil, sold and serviced separately from DOT-fluid systems
  • Sold individually per wheel (front or rear) — order two for a complete bike
  • Rotors sold separately
  • 301 grams (front, lever and caliper, no rotor)
