Description

Direct mount chainrings eliminate the spider entirely, bolting the ring straight to the crank arm for a stiffer connection between your foot and the chain. The Shimano XT SM-CRM86 uses this interface to pair with Deore XT FC-M8200 cranksets, though the 0mm offset design also makes it compatible with XTR FC-M9200 and FC-M9220 cranks if you're mixing component levels or replacing a worn ring on a higher-end build. That cross-compatibility matters if you've upgraded cranks but want to stick with XT-level chainrings, or if you're sourcing a replacement and the XTR version isn't available.

Chain retention on 1x drivetrains depends almost entirely on the chainring's tooth profile. Shimano's Dynamic Chain Engagement+ shapes alternating tall and short teeth with hooked leading edges that grab the chain as it wraps around the ring. The geometry keeps the chain seated through rock gardens, root sections, and the kind of repeated impacts that would bounce a chain off a conventional ring. The alternating profile also reduces noise by giving the chain a consistent engagement pattern rather than chattering across uniform teeth. You'll notice the difference on technical descents where chain slap typically gets loud and annoying.

Aluminum construction keeps the weight reasonable while providing enough material for Shimano's reinforced design. The reinforcement matters because direct mount rings sit exposed on the drive side, taking hits from rocks and logs that spider-mounted rings would avoid. If you've bent or damaged a previous ring from trail debris, that reinforcement is what you're paying for here. The anodized finish adds corrosion resistance for riders who don't always clean their bikes immediately after muddy rides.... Read More
