The steel outer layers still handle the actual friction and wear, so pad compatibility and stopping feel stay in familiar Shimano territory. The alloy spider carries that same heat-management logic to the center of the rotor and adds rigidity to the two-piece construction.

The SM-RT86 uses the ISO 6-bolt mount pattern, which covers most XT-era mountain hubs and any current hub spec'd as 6-bolt rather than Center Lock. Three diameters are offered—160mm, 180mm, and 203mm—so you can mix and match front-to-rear depending on bike travel, rider weight, and terrain. The rotor is sold individually, not as a pair, which is worth noting when you're pricing out a full brake refresh.

Pad compatibility is open to both resin and metal-sinter compounds, but the SM-RT86 is optimized around Ice-Tech pads with the cooling fins—pair the two together and you're getting the full temperature-drop benefit Shimano designed the system around.
