Description
Heat buildup during extended descents causes brakes to fade right when you need them most. Shimano's ICE TECHNOLOGIES addresses this with the SM-RT86 rotor, which uses a three-layer sandwich construction that manages temperature more effectively than solid steel designs. The aluminum core conducts heat away from the braking surface while stainless steel outer layers handle pad contact and wear. This construction drops rotor surface temperatures by roughly 100 degrees Celsius compared to conventional single-material rotors during sustained braking.
The SM-RT86 runs the 6-bolt mounting interface, which means it works with any hub drilled for that standard. Installation uses the included bolts and anti-loosen washers, a small detail that prevents the common annoyance of rotor bolts backing out over time. The rotor is directional, so check the arrow stamped on the surface and mount it with rotation matching your wheel direction. Getting this wrong reduces braking efficiency and can cause noise issues that no amount of pad bedding will fix.
Shimano designed the rotor blade profile to shed mud and debris rather than trap it against the pads. Trail conditions that would glaze or contaminate other rotors have less impact here because water and grit have somewhere to go. The cutout pattern also reduces rotating mass without compromising the structural rigidity needed for consistent pad contact. Running this rotor with Shimano's ICE TECH finned brake pads maximizes the cooling benefit since both components are designed to move heat away from the caliper.... Read More
