The BR-M9220 caliper uses four ceramic pistons in a one-piece forged body, which Shimano introduced as a rebuild of the previous-generation XTR platform. Ceramic pistons reduce heat transfer to the brake fluid, which matters on long alpine descents where consecutive minutes of braking can otherwise cook the system and introduce lever fade.
