Description

Shimano builds two different XTR cranksets for the M9200 generation, and which one you want depends entirely on how you ride. The FC-M9200 is the cross-country version—optimized for weight savings with a standard 24mm steel spindle. The FC-M9220 enduro version uses a beefier spindle for big-hit durability but adds grams. If you're racing XC, building a lightweight marathon bike, or just prioritizing efficiency over abuse tolerance, the M9200 is the one you want.

The crankarms themselves come from Shimano's HOLLOWTECH II cold hammer forging process, which creates hollow aluminum arms that maintain stiffness while cutting rotating weight. This isn't just marketing—hollow-forged cranks genuinely accelerate faster than solid ones because you're spinning less mass with every pedal stroke. The integrated 24mm steel spindle threads directly into the drive-side crankarm, creating a one-piece unit that eliminates flex at the spindle-to-arm interface where cheaper cranks lose power.

Q-factor measures the distance between your pedals, and the FC-M9200 uses a 170mm Q-factor that's been standard on XC race bikes for years. Combined with a 55mm chainline, this crankset fits modern Boost-spaced frames (148mm rear hub spacing) without pedaling interference or chainline compromise. The chainline matters for shifting performance and chain retention—get it wrong and you'll fight dropped chains or sluggish shifts regardless of how well-tuned your derailleur is.... Read More
