Shimano offers the M9200 with either a standard axle or a 3mm shorter axle option that matches the Q-factor of their SPD-SL road pedals, which is aimed squarely at road riders moving into gravel who don't want their stance width changing between bikes. If you're running an SPD-SL road setup and want your gravel or XC bike to feel identical underfoot, the shorter-axle version is the one to grab; if you're building a dedicated mountain bike or don't care about matching a road Q-factor, the standard axle is what you want.

Beyond the axle choice, the M9200 is the update to the long-running M9100 and keeps the pared-back, no-cage XC shape that made the previous generation a race-day staple. Stack height stays at 15.1mm, which puts your foot close to the spindle centerline and shortens the lever arm that causes flex when you're standing on the cranks. Bearing placement is spread wide across the spindle to distribute load evenly through the pedal stroke, and the chromoly axle rides on Shimano's serviceable loose-ball-and-cone bearing arrangement — the same setup that's kept older XTR pedals rolling for a decade or more with occasional grease flushes.

The binding is standard SPD with independent spring tension adjustment on each side, so you can dial entry and release force to match your preference. Slim axle housing and the open binding design shed mud fast, which is why this pedal shows up under so many XC and cyclocross racers even when conditions turn sloppy. Pedals ship with SM-SH51 single-release cleats; if you prefer an easier bailout, the SM-SH56 multi-release cleats are a straight swap. Coverage-wise, the pedal body is minimal by design — the rounded contact zones interface with the pontoons on stiff-soled XC shoes to give you lateral stability without the bulk of a trail-oriented cage. If you want a caged version with a larger platform for trail and enduro riding, that's the M9220, not this pedal.
