XTR RD-M9250 Di2 12-Speed Rear Derailleur
Description
Shimano's XTR RD-M9250 marks the brand's first fully wireless mountain drivetrain, and it takes a different path than the mechanical XTR that came before it—there's no traditional clutch mechanism, no shift cable, and the battery lives inside the derailleur body itself. The dual-spring stabilizer replaces the friction clutch you'd expect at this level, which lets Shimano shrink the main pivot and build a wedge-shaped profile that glances off rocks instead of catching on them. Paired with 23mm of added ground clearance over the previous XTR generation, this is the most impact-tolerant derailleur Shimano has ever put on a bike.
Cage choice determines your cassette compatibility, and this is where riders get tripped up. The GS medium cage is built specifically for the new 9-45T M9200 compact cassette—it's the XC-oriented option, lighter and tucked in tight for weight-conscious racers who don't need a bailout gear. The SGS long cage handles the standard 10-51T M9200 cassette and covers the range most trail and enduro riders will want. The cassettes and derailleurs are matched sets; you can swap lower cages to convert between the two, but the wrong pairing won't work.
Automatic Impact Recovery is the headline durability feature. When the derailleur takes a hit, the motor lets it pivot away from the obstacle, then snaps it back into alignment once you're past—no stopping, no manual reset, no interrupted pedaling. Combined with the wide link structure, skid-plate outer face, carbon inner plate, and covered pulleys that keep debris out of the jockey wheels, this derailleur is engineered to survive the kind of strikes that end other components' service lives. SHADOW ES pulls the whole assembly closer to the cassette, which is where that extra ground clearance comes from.... Read More
