Description

Most hot melt chain wax is straight paraffin. Silca builds Secret Chain Blend from 4 different waxes, starting with highly refined laboratory-grade paraffin and loading it with a high concentration of nano-scale tungsten disulfide in 3 specific particle sizes. The WS2 is the working part of the formula. Under the heat and pressure inside a chain, those particles don't simply lubricate — they fill the microscopic crevices in the roller, pin, and plate surfaces with a lubricious, wear-resistant solid, modifying the metal itself rather than sitting on top of it. Silca rates the treatment at up to 8 watts saved against conventional chain lubricants, and the drivetrain stays clean to the touch because there's no wet carrier left on the chain to hold road grit.

That surface-modifying behavior is also why the system improves with use instead of fading. Silca states that a chain run on Secret Chain Blend and topped up with Super Secret Chain Lube gets faster over time and after repeated waxings as more WS2 works into the bearing surfaces. A single application is rated for up to 300 miles of riding before it needs a drip top-up or a return to the pot. Run that way, Silca claims drivetrain component life extends up to 10 times over oil lubrication, and testing at ZeroFrictionCycling confirmed a properly cared-for chain reaching over 25,000 km. That's the real argument for the process — chains and cassettes stop being parts you replace on a seasonal schedule.

The one thing that ruins the result is a dirty chain. Hot wax doesn't displace factory grease or old oil; it has to bond to bare metal. A used chain needs a full degrease and a complete dry before it ever touches the pot, which is what Silca's Chain Stripper is for. A factory-new chain has a shortcut: drop a StripChip square into the melt, run the wax at 125°C, agitate, soak 10 minutes, then bring the temperature back to 75°C for a final 10 minutes before hanging the chain. StripChip strips packing grease and waxes in one operation, but it only works on new chains — it isn't a substitute for degreasing a chain that's been ridden on oil.... Read More
