J04C Metal Disc Brake Pad
Description
Metal pads and resin pads solve different problems, and running the wrong compound in the wrong conditions is one of the fastest ways to burn through a set of pads or lose braking confidence on a long descent. The Shimano J04C is the sintered metal option built for two-piston XTR, XT, SLX, and Deore calipers, using a metallic compound that holds up in wet, gritty, shoulder-season conditions where resin pads glaze over or wear down in a single muddy ride. The finned aluminum backing plate—Shimano's Ice Technologies heat-management design—pulls heat out of the pad and caliper to keep braking consistent when the rotors get hot.
Compound choice matters here. Sintered metal pads bite harder in the wet, last significantly longer than resin, and shrug off contamination from mud and trail grit. The trade-off is a longer bed-in period, more noise when they're cold or damp, and more aggressive wear on the rotor surface over time. If you ride year-round in the Pacific Northwest, Front Range mud season, or anywhere with sustained wet descents, this is the compound that keeps working when resin has already given up.
Fitment is specific: the J04C is a J-shape narrow pad for Shimano's two-piston calipers only. That covers most XTR, XT, SLX, and Deore trail brakes from the last decade, plus the older BR-R785 and BR-RS785 flat-mount road/gravel calipers. Do not install these in a four-piston caliper (BR-M8120, BR-M7120, BR-M9120)—those use the wider N-shape or H-shape pads and the J04C physically will not fit. Rotors rated for metal pads are required; check the rotor for the "Resin Only" marking before installing.
