Description

The M540 sits in a strange spot in Shimano's SPD lineup — priced above the entry-level M520 but well below XT, and mechanically close enough to both that a lot of riders don't realize how much pedal they're getting for the money. Shimano's PD-M540 SPD pedal uses the same dual-sided open binding, chromoly axle, and sealed cartridge bearing architecture that has kept SPD as the reference standard for off-road clipless for three decades, but shaves weight over the M520 with a lighter forged aluminum body. If you're spec'ing a cross-country hardtail, a gravel bike, or a cyclocross rig and don't want to spend XT money, this is the pedal that lands in most of those builds.

The open binding design is the piece that matters most in mud, snow, and wet leaves. As you step in, debris gets pushed out through the body rather than packing into the mechanism, so engagement stays consistent when conditions turn ugly. Front and rear tension is independently adjustable via the 3mm hex bolts on either end of the binding, which lets you dial retention softer for training and firmer for racing without buying a different pedal.

The pedals ship with SM-SH51 single-release cleats, which release only when you rotate your heel outward — the standard choice for most riders. If you prefer the SM-SH56 multi-release cleat that lets you exit with an upward pull as well, those are sold separately and drop straight into the same binding. Stack height sits at 17mm, and the pedals thread in with an 8mm hex from the backside rather than a traditional 15mm pedal wrench.... Read More
