Description
Cyclocross DNA runs through the Crux platform in ways that separate it from the adventure-loaded gravel bikes filling out the rest of the category. Where many competitors add suspension, integrated storage, and compliance-first frame designs, Specialized went the opposite direction with the Crux Expert. The FACT 10r carbon frame borrows construction methods from the Aethos road program, with layup schedules and tube profiles tuned independently across 6 sizes through Rider First Engineering rather than scaled from a single mold. An 825-gram frame weight at the 10r carbon tier signals where those engineering hours went — into removing material without sacrificing stiffness at the bottom bracket and head tube, where pedaling force and steering precision demand it most.
The geometry reinforces the race-oriented positioning. Head tube angles run from 70.5° on the size 49 to 72.5° on the size 61, paired with a consistent 50mm fork offset that produces steering response noticeably quicker than the relaxed gravel tourers in this price range. Chainstays measure 425mm across all sizes, keeping the rear end short enough to feel snappy out of corners while maintaining heel clearance for wider tires. And the tire clearance is substantial — 47mm on 700c wheels or 2.1" on 650b — which means the Crux handles loose, rocky terrain without asking you to own a second bike. Stack and reach numbers position riders between a road race fit and a dedicated gravel tourer, leaning closer to the aggressive end.
SRAM's Rival XPLR AXS E1 groupset handles the drivetrain with wireless electronic shifting across a 1x13-speed range. The 10-46t cassette paired with a 40-tooth chainring delivers 460% gear range, and the 13th cog closes the gaps between ratios that made earlier 1x gravel setups feel compromised at cruising speeds. Wireless AXS connectivity eliminates shift cable routing and the maintenance that follows, while the E1-generation lever ergonomics update the hand position and hood shape from the previous eTAP design....
