Description
Twenty-four years and eight generations into the Epic program, Specialized has produced the lightest full-suspension cross-country race bike ever built. The Epic 9 frame weighs 1,589 grams in size medium, a figure that comes from full-frame FEA optimization, size-specific seat tube layups, and a forged link that sheds weight without sacrificing the chassis behavior the platform is known for. The Expert build applies the new frame and updated kinematics to a more accessible price point than the S-Works tier while preserving the geometry, suspension architecture, and ride character of the flagship.
The story of this generation isn't just lower mass. The Specialized Science Club started with the Epic 8 benchmark and went after the things that actually slow riders down, which meant cutting suspension friction by 11% through revised pivot and link design. Lower leverage at sag improves pedaling support and traction on seated climbs, while the mid-stroke and end-stroke leverage curves match the proven Epic 8 numbers to maintain bump control and bottom-out resistance. Travel stays at 120mm front and rear, the figure that has settled in as the modern World Cup XC standard after years of platforms hovering closer to 100mm.
Geometry follows the template Epic 8 helped establish, with subtle revisions informed by Body Geometry fit data and feedback from the Specialized Factory XC équipe. Head tube angle sits at 65.9° in the low flip-chip position and 66.3° in the high setting, paired with a 76° seat tube angle that keeps the rider centered over the bottom bracket on climbs. Reach figures run long, with chainstay lengths scaled by frame size — 435mm on S and M, 438mm on L, 442mm on XL — to preserve handling balance across the size run. The flip-chip lets riders tune bottom bracket height for stability or pedal clearance depending on the course.... Read More
