Description
The Epic 9 represents the ninth generation of Specialized's cross-country race platform, and the Pro build delivers the new chassis and its defining advances at a price point below the S-Works tier. The FACT 11m carbon frame carries the same Progressive XC Race Geometry as the flagship, with 120mm of front and rear travel, a threaded bottom bracket shell, internal cable routing, and a 12x148mm UDH rear dropout. What separates Epic 9 from its predecessor isn't a single headline feature but a system-level rethink: 11% less suspension friction through revised pivots and bushings, refined kinematics that reduce leverage at sag for better pedaling support, and a frame architecture engineered around full-frame FEA analysis to remove grams without compromising chassis behavior. The result is a platform that converts more rider energy into forward motion across the surfaces XC racing actually covers.
Geometry stays faithful to the numbers Epic 8 made benchmark, with revisions informed by Body Geometry fit data and racer feedback. The head tube angle sits at 65.9 degrees in the low flip-chip position, paired with a 76-degree seat tube angle that centers the rider over the bottom bracket for sustained climbing efficiency. Chainstays scale by frame size, running 435mm on small and medium, 438mm on large, and 442mm on XL, which keeps the handling consistent across the range rather than letting larger frames feel stretched. The flip-chip lets riders raise the bottom bracket for pedal clearance on technical courses or drop it for a lower center of gravity on smoother circuits. Stack heights on large and XL grew slightly compared to Epic 8, addressing fit feedback from taller riders who wanted a more proportional cockpit.
Suspension comes from RockShox's SID Ultimate and SIDLuxe Ultimate, both equipped with Flight Attendant. The wireless system reads terrain and rider input in real time and adjusts damping across three positions automatically, which removes the cognitive load of remembering to flip a lever before a punchy climb or a fast descent. The Ride Dynamics tune carries forward the Wide Open, Magic Middle, and Sprint-On-Lock settings that defined Epic 8, now paired with the lower-friction chassis. Magic Middle remains the setting most racers will leave alone for entire races: a firm pedaling platform that breaks through to active suspension when bump forces exceed pedaling inputs, with digressive damping that opens up travel for repeated hits. Wide Open delivers full traction and composure for technical descents, while Sprint-On-Lock minimizes motion for road transitions, starts, and finish-line efforts.... Read More
