If you want a great XC performance shoe with more overall versatility than the race-bred version, the Recon 3.0 Mountain Shoe is all about putting the legendary performance of S-Works Recon, power transfer, comfort, light weight, style—in a package perfect for the XC and gravel rider. Add in Body Geometry features, and the Recon 3.0 delivers the comfort and efficiency you require, with features that stand-out beaten paths of all types; perhaps even the cyclocross course. Standard Fit is a little more generous than the S-Works FormFit overall, but the Dual BOA of the Recon 3.0 allows for a more customizable performance fit than the single BOA Recon 2.0.
To deliver in-the-saddle speed as well as off-bike performance, Recon 3.0 mates a carbon sole with a Pavé-inspired glass fiber forefoot to create Carbon STRIDE toe-flex unit. This innovative combination lets your foot function naturally off the bike, yet still provides incredible power transfer thanks to a Specialized stiffness index of 10.0. Whether you’re flying up a run-up on the ‘cross course or looking for replenishment post ride, STRIDE toe-flex is a game changer.
Venturing off-road means heading into the unknown, so the designers have given the Recon 3.0 an XPEL Mesh upper to create a comfortable fit, securing fit that still expels water, keeping the shoe light and making it dry as fast as it rides. The fully-welded upper reduces seams for superior step-in comfort and a clean look. The upper closure is managed with Dual L6-Snap BOA® dials and a Velcro forefoot closure ensure micro adjustable comfort with a secure fit designed for all day comfort and performance, whether your ride calls for open gravel, twisting single track, and even more than your fair share of hike-a-bike. A Velcro closure at the forefoot allows you easily and quickly customize the fit of this key pressure zone. The fit is complemented by the Body Geometry informed insole, which cradles and lifts the fit into a natural shape to reduce the risk of injury while maintaining comfort. The Longitudinal Arch, 1.5mm built-in Varus Wedge angle, and Metatarsal Button have all been well-proven over many years, with adjustments and enhancements along the way.
As for the outsole tread, the SlipNot system has a rubber compound provides full coverage of the outsole for off bike traction on any surface, with open treads to eject mud, aggressive lugs where you need them, and even some smaller more open knobs under the arch, which can be knee and elbow savers on wet rocks and roots. The material is durable, yet offers great grip. Under toe mounts for toe spikes are in place, keep note crossers- mud season always comes. A protective soft shell toe guard is always appreciated, as is generous sliding 2-bolt cleat mounting plate that also has 2 sets of mounts to maximize the fore-aft positioning.
We often find that a larger market and more diverse user group longs for the top-end model of any shoe design, but the hidden gem- and one better suited for most people- is usually the best choice, and perhaps even the best value with technology and longevity of the series. The unisex Recon 3.0 definitely fits that description and at 355 grams per shoe it is weight competitive in the price point, while offering more features and all-around performance.
