Description
The Crux 5 is Specialized's biggest rework of the platform since the bike shed its cyclocross identity, and the S-Works frameset is where the new design philosophy lives in its purest form. The previous Crux earned a reputation as the lightest gravel bike on the market, and the Crux 5 keeps that weight discipline intact—789 grams for the FACT 12r frame in size 56—while adding aerodynamic shaping, expanded tire clearance to 55mm, and a geometry package built around what Specialized calls Time to Finish. That metric folds aero efficiency, ride quality, and handling into a single real-world speed measurement validated on actual race courses rather than just wind tunnel runs.
The aero work was developed in Specialized's Win Tunnel using the sixth-generation Moving Leg Mannequin, which captures how a rider's body in motion alters airflow across the bike at race-relevant speeds. The result is a claimed 15.2-watt savings versus the previous generation and roughly ten minutes faster over an Unbound-length course. The aero gains break down across the system: frame, fork, and seatpost contribute about half, the Roval Terra Aero CLX III wheels another 30 percent, and the Terra cockpit the remaining 20 percent. Even with the deeper aero wheels installed, a complete build comes in around 7.1 kg, with lightweight builds starting at 6.9 kg.
Frame shaping carries the load rather than added material. Specialized's engineers found that tubes deform in consistent, predictable patterns under load, fed that data into their supercomputer alongside the largest mechanical test dataset in cycling, and tuned tube shapes to carry force efficiently. The outcome is fewer carbon plies in places where shape alone handles the job—lighter weight, better ride quality, and improved structural integrity all at once. The 789-gram test target corresponds to a 70 kg rider at 44 kph on an 8.5 percent climb averaging 1175 watts with peaks to 2400 watts over roughly 600 km, well beyond standard fatigue testing protocols....
