Description
Cross-country and gravel racing demand a shoe that delivers every watt to the pedal yet stays stable when the riding ends and the hike-a-bike begins. The S-Works Recon EVO answers that problem with a race-bred carbon platform, a durable upper built for trail abuse, off-bike grip, and mud clearance — wrapped in Specialized's patented PowerHug closure system.
The headline feature is that PowerHug closure. Two BOA Li2 dials feed into a wrap that pulls the upper around the foot from multiple directions instead of cinching straight down across the instep. The result is even pressure distribution rather than concentrated tension across the top of the foot, which has plagued earlier S-Works mountain shoes. On long gravel days, that's the difference between finishing strong and stopping every 90 minutes to loosen the dials and shake out a numb forefoot. The Li2 dials micro-adjust in both directions, so you can dump tension on a climb and reload at the top without stopping.
Underfoot, the unidirectional carbon outsole prioritizes stiffness directly beneath the pedal axle where it matters for power transfer, while the toe and heel stay slightly more compliant for walking. Lugged rubber tread covers the contact zones for hike-a-bike sections, run-ups, and the inevitable scramble across rocks when a climb gets too steep to clean. The Body Geometry Natural Last completes the comfort story. Specialized claims a 44% reduction in forefoot pressure compared to the previous last, which translates directly into more usable hours before fatigue sets in. If you've spent the last few seasons in older S-Works Recon shoes and made peace with a tight forefoot, the EVO has a noticeably different shape — wider through the toe box without losing heel hold....
