Description
Wireless shifting changed what we expect from a rear derailleur, and the Red AXS E1 represents SRAM's latest refinement of that technology. The E1 designation signals the current electronic platform, which maintains the same AXS wireless protocol while incorporating the lessons learned since the original wireless Red launch. The derailleur communicates directly with your shifters and pairs to the AXS ecosystem for battery monitoring, gear display, and customization through the app.
The Orbit fluid damper inside the cage manages chain tension without the on/off engagement of a mechanical clutch. This matters most when you're riding rough pavement or accelerating hard out of corners—the chain stays put without the added drag that mountain bike-style clutches can introduce. The damper works continuously rather than relying on a threshold to engage, which translates to quieter operation across varied terrain.
SRAM designed this derailleur around their Flattop chain and XG-1290 cassette, and while it'll index through any 12-speed SRAM road cassette, the system works best as a matched set. The maximum cog capacity reaches 36 teeth, which opens up gearing options that would have required a mountain derailleur a few years ago. If you're building a gravel bike or want lower gears for loaded touring on a road frame, that range matters.... Read More
