Red AXS E1 Brake-Shift Lever with Caliper
Description
True one-finger braking is the headline change here, and it comes from a ground-up overhaul of the hood and lever architecture that reshapes how the control sits under your hand. The SRAM Red AXS E1 Brake-Shift Lever with Caliper pairs that redesigned carbon lever with a flat-mount hydraulic caliper, and the ergonomic work targets fit across all hand sizes rather than a single average grip. True one-finger braking is at hand, with an overhauled hood and lever architecture that achieves breakthroughs for fit across all hand sizes and easy access to powerful and smooth braking from anywhere on the bar. The redesign gives better finger wrap for less fatigue on long days, and the whole system still sheds 83 grams over the previous generation. If the older Red AXS levers felt blocky in your hand or took too firm a squeeze to stop, this is the generation that fixes both.
The reach and contact point adjustments are the practical star of the redesign. Reach Adjust moves the lever closer to or farther from the bar, and Contact Point Adjust independently sets where the brake actually bites in the lever's throw. Truly independent reach and contact point adjustment allow for a highly personalized setup, with no risk of pinching your fingers or bottoming out on the bar no matter your settings. That independence is what lets you pull the lever in close for smaller hands and still get firm, predictable engagement. It's the difference between a setup that mostly works and one you dial in exactly to your hands.
On the braking side, the caliper got a skeletal redesign that makes it stiffer and lighter at the same time. The brake caliper's new skeletal design reduces weight by 83g a pair, and new internal architecture increases pad clearance by 4mm with the piston located further backwards in the caliper. That extra clearance is what keeps the rotor from rubbing when things heat up or the wheel flexes under load. It runs a flat-mount, 2-piston layout with a 20mm offset and bolts directly to flat-mount frames and forks. The system uses DOT fluid, and Bleeding Edge port placement makes for a cleaner, more consistent bleed if you service your own brakes. Since the pair drops 83 grams versus the outgoing version, you get more control and comfort without a weight penalty anywhere in the system.... Read More
